The LINK Centre

INFOLIT PROJECT

Getting started
An initial Information Literacy course has been run twice by the LINK Centre at Wits University (August - November 1998 and January - March 1999). In these courses 192 people were trained, and 102 (53%) of them were women. The vast majority of these people had never touched a computer before the course, and all were competent word-processing computer users at the end. At least five of the people trained obtained jobs where these ICT skills were relevant.

Following these initial course, there is now a great demand for further such courses. With no formal marketing (just relying on word-of-mouth) the LINK centre currently has a waiting list for this Information Literacy course of over 550 people. This experience has lead to the formulation of this project to expand the number of training points in Gauteng.
